What Happens at Meme and Popi’s

Stays at Meme and Popi’s…

Well, except when I show you here but you know what I mean.  Well, maybe you don’t.  I do mean this in the way that we all know and think of, but there is the literal part of meaning exactly what it says.  Or maybe it would be better stated, “What happens at Meme and Popi’s will not be happening at home.”   For instance, there is a sleeping problem at Meme’s.  The problem, to be exact, is Meme.  She knows the bedtime, knows how to read the clock, but she doesn’t care.  Then, this happens….

A first that I will probably never see again.  This child has never fallen asleep watching cartoons…N.E.V.E.R!

Then there is this…

She can’t even make it to bed.

And then I take a break from sewing to find this…

I have to say, this brings back some of my fondest memories of growing up with my granddad.  This was Addison’s first time and she was in looooove.

Then there is Olivia…you know…5 going on 25?  She had to drive with no one helping.

And this will definitely be “staying” at Meme’s…not that we want to remind Daddy, but he has to walk to cut our grass and well, we don’t “do” walking.  Well, until he tells us we have too, maybe...

It's A...

Did you really think I was going to just plaster the sex of this baby on here without some kind of story?  Please indulge us….just for another minute.

SO….it all started out with me thinking we didn’t need to find out the sex of this baby at all.  It evolved into a stolen idea from a friend, which led to involving my mother, which created the coolest, most shocking revelation of my life!

Yesterday started with suspense in the air, much like Christmas morning.  You know, that feeling of today is the day and the excitement of the “What’s in the box feeling?”  Cowgirl Chondra flew in Friday night from Texas and I quickly realized that we needed to escape from the house before she had to play the Princess Memory game for the two hours we had before spa day.  So, let me tell you, there is one thing Cowgirl cannot resist and that is Steinmart.  If you only knew the routes we have driven to find her a Steinmart (NO, there is no Steinmart where we live).  So, we were off.

There were a few purchases made ;) and then it was spa time.  My two lifetime “besties”, Sydney and Heather, were waiting on us when we got there and my mom was setting up lunch in the spa room.  So here we all were, four thirty “somethin’s” and two hip grandmothers, one we knew, the other one a stranger but she fit right in, so we let her stay.  The fun began with food, drinks and laughs.  Brightly colored polish was being splashed on fingers and toes when we got a clue….  A little blue envelope was given to me by my mom…we opened it…it had a picture of her on a cute little bench holding the reveal envelope we had given her.  When she gave it to me she said, “The signs are everywhere.”

So here sat four women with 20 years of combined higher education.  Yes, this seemed to all of us like a mystery we should be able to solve before the reveal.  We carefully retraced the morning and the colors but came up with nothing.  So then we decided they might be Godly signs, like we saw more blue cars on the road then red.  I know, we thought so too, so we decided to come up with the idea of a picture about how to reveal the answer on the blog, since our 20 years didn’t hold nothin’ on God.

All refreshed, it was time to get ready for the party.  It was like high school again.  A bunch of girls getting ready together, makeup everywhere, hot rooms because every curling/heating appliance we own was going…you women know.  It was FUN!

As the party got started and the food was finally prepared and ready to eat, Mom announced that we all needed to gather in the den and watch a video.  So, we did.  The opening shot was the same one as the picture that was given to me earlier in the day.  As she began to speak, she revealed that it was July 1, 2011 and the sex of the baby was about to be known for the first time.  As she spoke, tears began to accumulate in the corners of my eyes, only to be blinked away when she began to open the envelope.  She slowly pulls the ultrasound out of the envelope, we are on the edge of our seats, and the video stops…She announces that we will know the sex before dessert, but it is time to eat.  I know, I know…

At the conclusion of our meal my mom had everyone vote, by colored paddle, as to what they thought we were having.  Here are the results…

Soon, the phone rings and she tells us that the caller has asked that we gather on the front lawn.  We accommodate the request and we wait and wait and wait.  Until finally we see something out of the ordinary…

As it slowly turns into the circle drive I have two thoughts…we either have to ride somewhere for a clue or someone we know is going to be in there.  Wrong.  As the car comes to a slow stop, the passenger door pops open and the cutest little boy you have ever seen walks around the front of the car like this…

My mind is reeling as he hands the box to my two girls.

Now I am thinking we have a clue in the box.  After many pictures I ask if we should open the box.  “Yes!” my mom exclaims.  I tear the ribbon off and the girls tear into the neatly packaged box.

As I slowly lifted the lid off the box, Addison tore the tissue paper back and this is what we saw...

Enjoy Them

As my eyes slowly peeled back Sunday morning, at the sound of what I should have thought was the sweetest sound ever, I was staring into the wide eyes of my sweet, precious 5 year old.  Except, I wasn't thinking sweet and precious during the 7 o'clock hour.  I hadn't slept all night due to a random summer allergy cold that crept in on me in conjunction with the bathroom visits that are part of my life now.  I am sure I grunted at her, told her to go find Meme, and rolled back over.  Well, that didn't last long because then sweet Addison came to the edge of my bed, with her four blankets, and said "Mornin' Momma!"  I gave up, rolled over and got out of bed.

No where was it in my mind that we would be going to church that day.  Frankly, I planned to spend the day in my pajamas, in bed.  No guilt at all.  I felt like a train ran over me.  But...as we sat at breakfast and I realized that my sweet angels should have gotten about two more hours of sleep based on the attitudes that were permeating the air and the following arguments and fights that followed, I was thinking church might just be what was needed for my sanity.  So, I found the energy to get us all dressed and ready and we were off.

As we meandered up the sidewalk to the main entrance, the sweetest old lady approached us and with the most genuine smile a Southern woman can plaster on and said, "Such beautiful girls."  Looks right in my eyes and says, "Enjoy them."  I can tell you that is not the first time that has been said to me by someone several decades older then me.  But, this time it hit me like a rock.  I smiled at her and politely said, "I will."  I can only vaguely tell you what that service was all about about because there was just something about this woman and the way she said this to me that got me thinking...H.A.R.D.

So, I informed my girls the next night that the following day would be our day to play games, color, whatever they wanted to do.  Olivia asks, "No cleaning?"  I happily respond, "No."  Now I knew I had to follow through because she is 5 and doesn't forget anything.

I am happy to report that we had the B.E.S.T day hanging out working puzzles, making jellyfish and crabs out of paper plates and construction paper, playing our Wii, taking a hike to the mailbox (yes, it is a hike in my parents' neighborhood), looking in on the garden, and feeding the fish and ducks down at the pond.  We even had two desserts for lunch!  We had a blast!  And I didn't die.  And I didn't wonder what wasn't getting done. And the house didn't fall down.  No one starved.  The clothes patiently waited another day in the hamper.  This was a day I needed as much as they did.  A day where they enjoyed me and I ENJOYED THEM!

P.S.  There are no pictures of this amazing day...because I was enjoying them...and it was wonderful..just in case I didn't mention that.
